That’s right, it’s time for the playoffs, and all four varsity teams from The Archer School for Girls (Brentwood) are headed to the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section (CIF-SS) preliminaries and team playoffs this week and next. Besides the softball and beach volleyball teams heading to the playoffs, Archer’s track and swimming teams are sending an all-time record amount of athletes to the CIF-SS Preliminaries.

Records Fall as Archer Softball Team Wins League
Battery of Bellamy and Dennis Lead Team to 13-3 record, Team Opens CIF Playoffs at Home May 18
Brentwood - The Archer softball team posted a perfect 8-0 league record to capture their third straight league title and fifth in the last seven years. Along the way, pitcher Kam B. ’18 and catcher Morgan D. ’19 continue their assault on the Archer record book. Kam recorded her 358th career strikeout on Thursday, April 27, at home against Faith Baptist (Canoga Park), passing Carolyn Z. ’14 for first place on the all-time list. Morgan has been on a hitting tear all season, batting .710 on the year and crushing her 17th and 18th home runs of the year (both were three-run shots) at home against Oakwood (North Hollywood) on Monday, May 8, to secure the Liberty League championship. Morgan has also been on a tear with the media, having appeared recently as a guest on “LA Talk Live” radio in addition to being featured in the KNBC 4 News. With Annabelle G. ’17, Rachel P. ’17 and Liadan S. ’17 all playing their best as the regular season comes to a close, Archer, 13-3 overall, is looking to make a deep run in the CIF-SS Division 7 playoffs. The first place league finish secures Archer with a home game in the first round of the playoffs, which begin on Thursday, May 18. The complete brackets will be released via the CIF-SS website on Monday, May 15, at 12:00 p.m.

More Records Fall to Swimming Team at League Finals
Big Three of DeVera, Germano, and Wong-Smith Key to Undefeated Season
Westwood - After finishing the Liberty League prelims with a dominant but not perfect performance, Archer swimmers readjusted their goggles and took it up yet another level at the UCLA SAC pool at the Liberty League finals on Friday, May 5. Having already qualified seven swimmers and three individuals for CIF-SS prelims, Archer wanted to avenge a second-place finish to Buckley (Sherman Oaks) in the 400-yard freestyle relay at the league prelims. The jamming junior team of Claire B. ’18, Summer D. ’18, Claire G. ’18, and Saskia W. ’18 cut an astounding 18 seconds off their time from the league prelims to win first place en route to Archer’s third straight Liberty League Swimming Championship. Now it is time for the qualified athletes to take the 75-mile trip to the Riverside Aquatics Complex for the CIF-SS Division 4 prelims and finals on Wednesday, May 10, and Friday, May 12, respectively. Last year, Archer recorded a best-ever ninth place finish out of the 45 schools that made it to the finals. The girls are looking forward to another top finish this year, with the 400-yard freestyle relay team seeded fifth out of 40 teams and Wong-Smith seeded third out of 40 in the 100-yard butterfly. You can follow the team with real-time scoring on the Meet Mobile Swim Meet App.

Star Tracking
Young Track Athletes making a Name for Archer Track
Van Nuys - While Archer may currently lack depth in distance runners and in some field events, the young sprinting stars scored enough points to rally the team to a third-place finish at the Liberty League finals on Tuesday, May 2, at Birmingham Highs School in Van Nuys. Hailey A. ’20 won first place in both the 100-meter and 400-meter and finished second to Nia M. ’20 in the 200-meter, while Miaya S. ’19 finished third in the 400-meter and won first place in the pole vault with a 10-foot vault. The sprint party continued in the relays, as Nia and Hailey were joined by fellow 9th grader Lena J. ’20 and junior Dominque W. ’18 to crush Oakwood (North Hollywood) in the finals of the 4x100-meter relay. Sophomore Caitlin C. ’19 joined Miaya, Lena and anchor Nia to win the 4x400-meter relay. Each of the six athletes mentioned has qualified for CIF-SS prelims, a school record. The relay teams, along with Hailey in 100-meter and 200-meter, Nia in the 200-meter and 400-meter and Miaya in the pole vault all are threats to advance to the CIF-SS Finals. The CIF-SS Division 4 prelims take place at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, at Carpinteria High School. The CIF-SS Finals are scheduled for Saturday, May 20, at Cerritos College.

Beach Volleyball Team Depth Earns Spot in IBVL Playoffs
Santa Monica - Archer’s deepest beach volleyball roster ever has led the team to a 3-5 record, finishing third out of the Westside Division and securing one of 24 spots in the 80-school Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League (IBVL) playoffs. There is only one open division in the IBVL, with the league arranged by geography. Archer made it out of a tough division hosted at the Annenberg Community Beach House that included volleyball powers Marymount (Los Angeles) and Notre Dame Academy (West Los Angeles). Archer has a roster of 20 that includes Varsity and JV players, with ten players competing weekly for the top six spots that make up the three two-person teams that play each match. Seniors Sophie S. ’17 and Zoe P. ’17 are on track as the number one duo that will open the playoffs against first round opponent Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth), the number 2 team out of the Mountain Division, on Thursday. May 10, at 3:30 p.m. at the Annenberg Beach Courts. The second round takes place on Friday, May 12, the district finals are on Saturday, May 13, the state finals are slated for Saturday, May 20, at the Metro Beach Volleyball Complex in Chatsworth.
